| Customer Reviews: Great for squirrels, but not raccoons... April 12, 2008 Dr. Nancy E. Rossiter (Amelia Island, FL) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I live in an area with a lot of old oak trees, so the community has a huge squirrel population. I have had problems with the little furry guys before - they can literally empty an entire feeder in an hour. I have purchased more expensive models before, but the squirrels figured out a way to hang upside down and raid the seed. This product works extremely well - it doesn't stop the squirrels from trying, but they get discouraged after awhile and jump down, leaving the seed alone.
One morning I woke up to find the shepherds hook I had the bird feeder hanging on bent to the ground and the feeder in the middle of the yard on its side. We had a windstorm during the night, so I figured it blew down. The next day I woke up to the same thing - and the feeder was completely empty.
In addition to a large squirrel colony, we also have a large raccoon colony. The raccoons managed to push the pole to the ground, remove the feeder from the hook, and placed the feeder on its side, so that the levers that close off the seed when the weight of a squirrel lands on it were not operational....and proceeded to empty the contents of the feeder.
I have been able to overcome this problem by greasing the pole the feeder is on....the raccoons can't get a grip on the pole to push it to the ground.
Overall, this product is great for what it sets out to do... keep squirrels from hogging all the seed....just watch out for raccoons!
Finally, a durable squirrel buster May 31, 2007 C. White (Connecticut) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I finally found a bird feeder that is both squirrel 'proof' and durable meaning that it will last more than a season. I purchased two and, unlike other feeders I tried, this one withstood the assault of the most ambitious and agressive squirrels.
This is a must buy.
The birds don't stop coming! December 14, 2007 Dawn Papandrea-khan (New York) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got this for my birthday and I was a bit skeptical at first. It took about 8-9 days for the birds to figure out that the feeder was even here. Once the first bird came, it took only a few hours and we had a whole myriad of different birds. They love the feeder, so I love the feeder too. I just use a mixed blend bird seed and they seem to like it a lot. The feeder itself is easy to use. You just twist the top part off, fill it with seeds and hang it up. I would advice filling it outside because the seeds can spill out of the holes a little bit. As far as being squirrel proof, we have not had any squirrels bother it yet.

I've had this feeder for a few months now and it works perfectly. I live in the Puget Sound WA area and maybe my gray squirrels are not that bright, but they have not figured out a way to get the seed other than waiting on the ground for the birds to drop it.
A truly squirrel buster at work! February 23, 2009 Janet (New Jersey USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
We've had many bird feeders over the years, and never have we found one that was truly squirrel-proof, until now. The Brome 1051 Squirrel Buster Classic bird feeder ia amazing. It is funny and reassuring to watch the squirrels unsuccessfully try to outsmart this feeder and get at the birdseed. Instead, they have resigned to eating the seed scattered on the ground by the happy birds. Important note, however- follow the directions for placement exactly. The feeder needs to be at least 16 inches away from any branch to foil a squirrels attempt at reaching the seed outlets without placing their feet (and weight) on the perch, and the top needs to be "locked" on the feeder per instructions (to prevent a squirrel from holding onto the wire and reaching into the top.) I highly recommend this feeder.
